This is a Japanese kabazaiku (cherry bark craft) tea caddy, known as a chazutsu.
Kabazaiku is a traditional handicraft from the Kakunodate town in Japan.
It is made by applying a thin veneer of cherry bark to a wooden core.
The bark's natural properties help control moisture and are antibacterial, making it ideal for storing tea leaves.
The appearance of the bark changes with use, often becoming more lustrous and unique over time.
