It covers charts of shores, harbors, towns, and volcanoes created by early visitors.
A significant portion examines the maps produced by American missionaries, primarily at the seminary school in Lahainaluna, Maui, which introduced geographical education to the Hawaiian school system.
The work was recognized as the outstanding book of 1985-1993 by Ka Palapala Po'okela, the association of Hawaiian publishers.
