The High Chiefess, Ruth Keelikolani by Kristin Zambucka, which is a biography of the Hawaiian princess.
Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani (1826–1883) was a powerful and wealthy high chiefess and great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I, who united the Hawaiian islands.
She served as the Governor of the Island of Hawaiʻi for 21 years.
Known for her strong advocacy of Hawaiian language and culture, she refused to speak English or convert to Christianity, insisting on traditional practices during a time of heavy missionary influence.
She is famously remembered for her actions during the 1880–1881 Mauna Loa eruption, where she approached the advancing lava flow and made offerings to the volcano goddess Pele, which is said to have stopped the flow and spared the town of Hilo.
Upon her death, she willed the majority of her lands to her cousin Bernice Pauahi Bishop, which led to the founding of the Kamehameha Schools.
